    If you are sympathetic to someone who is in a bad situation, you are kind to them and show that you understand their feelings.

    e.g. She was very sympathetic to the problems of adult students...
           她对成年学生的问题深表同情。
    e.g. It may be that he sees you only as a sympathetic friend.
           也许他只是把你当作一个可以倾诉的朋友。
