1. 停止;停下
    If you have been doing something and then you stop doing it, you no longer do it.

    e.g. Stop throwing those stones!...
           不要再扔那些石头了！
    e.g. He can't stop thinking about it...
           他没办法不再想这件事。

2. 阻止;使中断;使停止
    If you stop something happening, you prevent it from happening or prevent it from continuing.

    e.g. He proposed a new diplomatic initiative to try to stop the war...
           他提出了一项新的外交计划以尽力阻止这场战争。
    e.g. If the fire isn't stopped, it could spread to 25,000 acres...
           如果大火不被扑灭，它可能会蔓延 2.5 万英亩。

3. (活动或过程)停下来，中止
    If an activity or process stops, it is no longer happening.

    e.g. The rain had stopped and a star or two was visible over the mountains...
           雨停了，山顶上有一两颗星星在闪烁。
    e.g. The system overheated and filming had to stop...
           系统过热，拍摄工作只好停了下来。

4. (机器等)停止运转;(使)停止工作
    If something such as machine stops or is stopped, it is no longer moving or working.

    e.g. The clock had stopped at 2.12 a.m...
           钟在凌晨 2 点 12 分时停了。
    e.g. His heart stopped three times...
           他的心脏曾 3 次停止跳动。

5. (使)(移动着的人或车)停下;把…拦住
    When a moving person or vehicle stops or is stopped, they no longer move and they remain in the same place.

    e.g. The car failed to stop at an army checkpoint...
           那辆车没有在军方检查站停车。
    e.g. He stopped and let her catch up with him...
           他停下来，好让她追上自己。

6. 停住;停下
    If something that is moving comes to a stop or is brought to a stop, it slows down and no longer moves.

    e.g. People often wrongly open doors before the train has come to a stop...
           人们经常在火车还尚未完全停好时就违规打开车门。
    e.g. He slowed the car almost to a stop.
           他放慢车速，车几乎停住了。

7. 停下来(思考或解释)
    If someone does not stop to think or to explain, they continue with what they are doing without taking any time to think about or explain it.

    e.g. She doesn't stop to think about what she's saying...
           她都没有停下来想一想自己在说些什么。
    e.g. There is something rather strange about all this if one stops to consider it...
           如果停下来好好想想的话，就会发觉整件事情相当蹊跷。
