    If something sudden and unexpected startles you, it surprises and frightens you slightly.

    e.g. The telephone startled him...
           电话铃声吓了他一跳。
    e.g. Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you...
           对不起，我不是故意想吓你一跳的。
